There are two type of questions.

A Show Me question is where you physically have to do something to show the examiner.

A Tell Me question is where you  explain to the examiner what you have to do.

You will be asked two questions at the start of your driving test.

 

Q1 – Tell me how you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe for use on the road?

A – Ensure that there is minimum 1.6 mm of tread on the tyre and there is no physical damage on the side.

Q2 – Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check there is a safe level?

A – Identify the brake fluid reservoir and show the examiner where you check between maximum and minimum.

Q3 – Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil?

A – Identify the oil filler cap and then identify dip stick and tell the examiner how you use it, by pulling it out, cleaning it, dip it in and take it out back and check between maximum and minimum marks.

Q4 – Open the bonnet, identify where you would engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the correct level?

A – Identify the radiator head tank and show the examiner where to check between maximum and minimum.

Q5 – Open the bonnet, identify the windscreen washer reservoir and tell me how you would check the level?

A – Identify the windscreen washer bottle and show the examiner by lift off cap. Do visual check as there are no external signs.

Q6 – Show me how you would check the directional indicators are working?

A – Press the hazard flash button and check around the car to make sure the indicators are working.

Q7 – Tell me how you would check the head & tail lights are working?

A – Turn the lights on and make sure front lights, rear lights are working.

Q8 – Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car?

A – Depress the brake paddle and ask examiner to go and check for you or look in reflection in mirror or garage door.

Q9 – Show me how would you check that horn is working?

A – Identify the horn and press it.

Q10 – Tell me where you would find information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressure should be check?

A – This information should be in your car’s manual. Check the tyre with the reliable pressure gauge and not forget to have one spare in the boot.

Q11 – Tell me how you would know there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?

A – When you start a car, make sure ABS light goes off.

Q12 – Show how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know main beam is on?

A – Turn the main beam on by pulling it back and turn it off by pulling it back. You make sure to only use it at lonely road where nobody’s coming from the other way.

Q13 – Show me / explain how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?

A – With the engine on, make sure you turn steering left and right, if steering feels light then it is ok, and if is heavy then something is wrong.

Q14 – Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, both front and rear screens?

A – Turn all the heater controls to the picture of the windscreen and press the heater rear button for rear.

Q15 – Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers?

A – Pull the windscreen washer lever back it will start wipe.

Q16 – How would you check the fog lights are working? When must you use fog lights?

A – With the headlights on, switch on the fog light button and make sure you only use them when its visibility is less than 100 metres.

Q17 – Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey?

A – Depress the pedal if it feels firm the brake should be ok. If the pedal feels spongy or slake or goes to the floor. Something wrong. Car shouldn’t pull in one side.

Q18 – Tell me how you would make sure the head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provide the best protection in a event of crash?

A – Adjust the head restraint by pulling it up and down and make sure its level same the center of your head.

Q19 – Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?

A – Take the handbrake off and put it back on. Make sure you feel stretch in the cable and push it down to make sure it secure itself.
